mythic owl dream

Owls and Hummingbirds invade my subconscious. Point of View from my eyes. Click on the image for a HI-rez view.

Two nights ago I had a VERY vivid dream with an owl.

I was somehow at a high school, it wasn't the school I went to - but I seem to be helping some students deal with something. It was the very last day of senior year for someone, maybe me?

I was in the passenger seat of a a classic 1970's station wagon, and we were driving to the high school at night, and there were two other people in the car with me, both sisters. Both looked very much the same, dark hair, small glasses - and I knew that they were both really smart. The older sister was driving, and the younger was in the back seat.

As we drove down the road (at night) there was a zipping flash, and a noise, near the windshield. I exclaimed, "Did we hit a bird?"

We soon realized that there was a bird in the car with us. I had a flashlight (where I got it, who knows) and I shined it in the back, and there was something flying around, and at first it was scary. But we all soon realized it was a beautiful hummingbird (and slightly larger than normal, sparrow sized). We were all delighted, and we gently managed to shoo it out the window. But, in just a few seconds, we realized that it was back in the car, it had flown back into an open window.

And looking in the back behind me, I saw an adult OWL peeking over the seat!

It was a cat-like screech owl, with the tufted ears and the big yellow eyes. My first reaction was, "Oh no! It's going to eat the hummingbird!"

But the girl in the back seat had the hummingbird safely cradled in her lap, and - by this time - the owl was actually laying down, like it was relaxing, with it's big taloned feet resting on the legs of the girl next to it. (see funny illustration)

Eventually (I'm not sure how) we got the owl out of the car, and the humming bird too. My gut was saying: "Uh-oh, the owl is a sign that something big is gunna go down."
We finally got to the school, and I remember being totally determined to talk to someone who taught comparative mythology, (or something like that) in order to make sense of the symbology of the event.

It was dawn by now, and I was told that there was a teacher who could help me, but he jogs in the morning. I watched as he was running away from the school down a long path in a desert like canyon below me, and the path seemed to be guarded by another beautiful cat-like owl (or, more likely - the same one). The path looked treacherous and steep, and I needed to find another way down. Right then, I saw that the teacher was jogging back up from the bottom of the canyon a different (safer) way. It seems someone told him I needed help.

I wake up.

Also, the two sisters looked a lot alike, and I think they were BOTH Anya Briggs.

What (if anything) does it mean?

Why did I post this? And why did I draw the picture? I'm not sure. There was something SO overtly vivid about the dream, and I just couldn't shake it. I felt like I wouldn't get it out of my mind until I drew a picture. Also, Chris Knowles said to keep a dream log, and this one was especially intense.

I sent this dream around to a few pals, and I got back a really interesting assortment of replies. I'll post these in the comments (below) so this posting isn't ridiculously long.

Interesting story about the large bird flying at Regan's windshield.

A VERY similar thing happened to me during a jeep camping trip in the southwest years ago. I was driving north from New Mexico into Colorado when an eagle dove down in front of my vehicle. I was stunned to see such a beautiful (and huge!) bird come right at me like that.

My focus on this camping trip was to visit various ancient native american sites (anasazi). Eerie how similar this is to Regan's story. I also had the sense that it was communicating something to me.

Re: owls?

Hmmm wow very interesting dream. It's interesting too that you sent this to me as I was just writing about Hummingbirds today too lol. And also, last weekend there was a special "Nature" show about Hummingbirds that I watched with my daughter. Cat's and hummingbirds have been the "theme" for me the past few weeks lol - I have been seeing them, hearing about them, etc a lot. Now I guess OWLS are thrown into the mix! :) hehe

Here is some info about Hummingbirds as spiritual guides:

Hummingbird: messenger, timelessness

Hummingbird - the tiniest of all birds - brings special messages for us. ... It lives on nectar and searches for the sweetness of life. Its long tongue lets it bypass the often tough and bitter outer layer to find the hidden treasures underneath. ... In many traditions, Hummingbird feathers have been prized for their almost magical qualities. It is said that Hummingbird brings love as no other medicine can, and its presence brings joy to the observer.

If you have Hummingbird medicine, you adapt easily to whatever situation you may find yourself in, and make the most of your new circumstances. You don't waste time looking back and wishing for "what was" for you are concerned with making the most of "what is". ...You have a talent for finding the good in people, and are not put off by a gruff or abrupt exterior, for you know that, if you can only get beyond that tough outside layer, you'll find goodness and beauty inside....
and OWL:

Owl: deception, clairvoyance, insight (the night eagle)

... It is often referred to as Night Eagle. Owl is at home in the night. It has great awareness of all that is around it at all times. It has predator vision, which means it sees clearly what it looks at. It has great intuition: it is the totem of psychics and clairvoyants. It has the courage to follow its instincts. Owl's medicine includes seeing behind masks, silent and swift movement, keen sight, messenger of secrets and omens, shape-shifting, link between the dark, unseen world and the world of light, comfort with shadow self, moon power, freedom.

Well, I don't know, Mike. What do YOU think? Dreams are subjective.

It seems fairly obvious to me, but now that you've committed it to writing, you might want to look it over again to decide for yourself. I mean, it's like, REALLY obvious to me what it is, but seriously. Try to decipher it yourself.

Wow, at the very least, synchronicity. Seems owls tugging at your subconscious for sure, tapping away... by the way, my husband Jim's favorite bird, that he's always had an affinity for, the special little bird image I always give him, things like that, is...wait for it... the hummingbird!

Regan Lee said...

Oh and Mike, when are you going to send me some of your art work I can post at Alien Art Genre? hinting. . . hinting. . .

Good post, Mike. Owl and hummingbird together. Food for thought.

Owl as "night eagle". Fascinating... interesting link with my daylight eagle experience.

Here's my thoughts about some of the symbolism of your dream (much of it is just my gut reading): Owl = wisdom (in ancient greek mythology, owl was associated with Athena, "goddess of wisdom, war, strategy, industry, justice and skill"; check out the cool ancient greek owl coin image in this article: http://rg.ancients.info/owls/. Canyon = deep (ancient?) knowledge. Hummingbird = energy, excitement, restlessness, mobility (the backward flying capability makes me think of an ability to travel in any dimension, any time). In your image, you depict yourself holding the flashlight from an angle that implies you are lying down on the front seat (?). This seems strange, and yet oddly reflective of the scene in the back seat. I.e., YOU are the owl, or at least, in the position of the owl. The fact that the woman in the back is a duplicate of the woman in the front (as her "twin") seems to confirm this parallel reality.

To Kartott:

I'm NOT lying down on the front seat. It's a point of view, out of my own eyes. I drew it fast, so the perspective is a bit "forced"

To Regan Lee:

You husband's favorite little animal is the hummingbird - AND - his birthday is NOV 4th?!?!?

I made up some of my own notes of self examination - I'll post them soon...

Red Pill Junkie said...

Ahhh... November 4th comes out.

Are there hummingbirds where you live, Mike?

Owls are birds of the night. Hummingbirds enjoy the Sun. The owl wants to rest while the hummingbird seems to want to enter your life —but it needs a bit of protection from your friends.

Time to exit the night, and face the Sun :)

PS: I forgot to mention in the last thread, that for the ancient Aztecs, the hummingbird was also a symbol of the afterlife. The warriors who died in combat (the highest honor) would be rewarded with entrance to Huitzilopochtli's paradise, transformed into hummingbirds that would draw precious nectar (blood) from the flowers (sacrificed human hearts).

Kartott said...

Red Pill - interesting note about the Aztec understanding of hummingbirds. This seems compatible with my own sense of them as multidimensional creatures.

And, Anya Briggs wrote this:
- - - - - - HMMM! WHAT OR WHOM COULD IT BE!!! It's also you, by the way. I meant always and ever that you were self-identifying, so if I am the twins, I am also the aspect of your psychic, paranormal self that is either showing you your inner psychic sibling self (duality, bifurcation, both sides of the coin, yin yang, light/dark. etc), or you are just like I said, self-identifying with that aspect of yourself. Very cool what Adrienne had to say about hummingbirds, whoda thunk it? There's also a very "lion laying down with the lambs" aspect to this as owls are predators and this one as you say is almost cat like, lounging, chillin'-- nice!"

I (Mike C!) replied:
- - - - - - Ha-Ha - The image of the girls in the car. Well, they both look like me! This is a sort of joke with me - seems like everything I draw looks like me. (ego?) When I look a those sisters, I see me.

I did mange to capture a freeze frame of sorts, that's pretty close to what I dreamed. I had a funny compulsion - I felt I just NEEDED to draw that little scene.

***
And, Anya Briggs replied:
- - - - - - And yes, I was thinking to myself, "If that's me, I really look androgynous" lol - definitely looks more like you in a wig and glasses. That's what shrinks call "transference", ha!

Mike! Of course there are additional layers of synchronicity here with you and with me. For the past several days I have been slaving over a new article I'm getting ready to post, and when you read it you'll see what I mean. Related directly to your post however, here are a few things that I thought about while reading it: 1) owls are often prominent animals in "screen memories" of ET encounters, 2) hummingbird is one of my totems and I'd be curious to know if experiencers in general commonly have an affinity with hummingbirds, and 3) the hilly canyon is very reminiscent of a remote-viewing dream experiment scene in which I participated about 10 years ago.

There's more to come, Mike! Now I'm really motivated to get my new post done...

Hello Mike C!
Fascinating, Fascinating Post!
I recently had a reading by Anya Briggs that has been positively mindblowing in the most positive way possible. She is like a tuning fork tapped into the greatest good and being exposed to that energy has been life altering for me.
If you weren't so courageous and open with what you are doing here I never would have trusted you and I would've never searched out the reading.
Right now I'd be adding some more lining to a self imposed tomb. I'm not being dramatic either.
You're a true role model and this is a very special place.
Thank you very much!
Peace!

Here's some stuff gleaned from several emails, where I reply to the challenge: "Try to decipher it yourself."

My reaction?

I haven't been outside much at sunset, so the universe hasn't beenable to show me a REAL owl, so it shows me this way...

Something is gunna happen soon. Not sure what.

==

And oh, I am the hummingbird.

==

Okay - I've read my dream text, like, 10 times, and I'm still lost. But here's what I come away with:

1. About the treacherous trail where I can see the jogging "mythology" teacher off in the distance - - -I want help, and I need help, but I have to figure it out for my self (maybe?)

2. In a previous email, I said: I am the hummingbird. I actually don't know why I wrote that. But, I write that the pretty hummingbird is safe in the girls lap, and the owl is on its back next to her. Am I seeking some sort of safety ??? (I didn't wanna type that, but that seems to fit the dream imagery)

3. At dawn, a new awakening, I need to follow a teacher, but the path is too treacherous (and guarded by a beautiful owl) - I need to find ANOTHER path (or another teacher?) - because the one I'm looking at is TOO treacherous.

That's as much as I got...
????

Red Pill Junkie said...

The path is treacherous. But you *are* the hummingbird. And as I've tried to explain to you, hummingbirds may seem fragile, but they are a symbol of the warrior's spirit.

You may think you need protection from your friends right now. But sooner or later you will have to take flight on your own, amigo.

An excerpt form an email from a pal:

... I think it's pretty remarkable that you had this particular dream, and seeing some of the comments really even gave me a bit of a chill...in a good way....as in recognizing the synchronous nature of the cosmos.

Another thought: I thought the girls in your dream also look a little like Thelma from Scooby-Doo! [Thelma helped solved mysteries] Also, right up by that picture of Mac you have up on your site, they kinda resemble him as well....especially the shape of their glasses and some of the facial features....?

And - I got another email that said the flashlight meant: we have to shed light on "the subject"

Interesting dream Mike. If you haven't already, you should check out Graham Hancock's book, Supernatural. He goes into shamanism, dreams, and the part our natural production of DMT may play in those dreams.

Also, people under the influence of DMT sometimes experience what seem to be alien encounters. And I'm not suggesting that dreams and alien ecounters are mere hallucinations--on the contrary--there's every possibility that DMT may allow us to experience these other realms that exist parallel to ours.

Very thought provoking stuff. Anyway, just thought I'd mention it. :)

I think it's interesting you chose to draw the Wise owl. The illustration really captures dream reality- well done.

I still like the owl-Grey link. And I met a leprechaun in a room filled with owls, so the hologramatic nature of reality may be peeking out once again.

Dave Bott said...

Wow!! Speaking of synchronicity... I also had a dream with 2 owls in it about 2 nights ago! It was one of the most vivid dreams I've had in a long time. I was in a forest clearing and turned around sensing there was a presence behind me. There were 2 larger-than-life owls, except they were crystal colored and see-through. Their appearance was similar to the Invisible Predator in the first 'Predator' movie. They were not really threatening though, they seemed to be watching me and perhaps were a conduit for channeled information? That moment was incredibly vivid and mysterious.
Speaking of dreams, I also had a dream/vision of a giant crystal spinning and Obama below as an Egyptian pharaoh (perhaps Ahkenaton?) about 3 months ago. Have you had any like that? :)

doug said...

Howdy Mike. Don't think I've ever commented here before, but I check in on you every now and then from CK's illustrious Secret Sun.

I had to comment on this one because the illustration is so striking to me personally. The girl(s) in the back, especially, look(s) almost exactly like my girlfriend, Cassandra, and the owl's eyes are taken straight from our cat, Wentworth (named after an old professor who just found me on Facebook today, hmmm...). Wentworth was meowing at me as I saw the picture, and when I looked over the top of the computer screen, the similarity of his eyes to the owl's (which I'd immediately thought of) slammed into me, as if to say, "Yep."

Weird, eh?! Thanks for an interesting sync. Come to think of it, is that even a sync? Or did you just illustrate my life from your dream?

Mike Clelland! said...

Reply to Doug:

Yes - the OWL is very cat like. I've seen some owls in the wild, and I am often struck by how much they look like cats.

And even during the dream i remember thinking "CAT" when the owl made his appearances.

It's funny - I feel a need to revise the faces of the girls. They actually look a littlle bit like ME (with a wig and glasses. This is normal for me, everything I draw, in some form or another - looks like me.

I'm impressed at how much chatter this dream created - very curious...

I get th impression the twins are both Kristy of the owl story AND Anya.Is the hummingbird that part that you fear the Visitors will destroy? If so what is the taming/balancing factor the twins play? Hope you don't mind it just what popped into my head.

Mike Clelland! said...

Hmmmm...

I saw Kristy for the first time in a few years on Jan 22. We had a delightful visit and lots of tea. The dream was (i think) on the night of jan 23/24.

I will add that I had the distinct impression that it was Anya Briggs. But who knows. (?)

Okay - I gotta decide if I revise that drawing, so it doesn't look like ME with a wig!

I brought a little stone statue of a bird cadged inside another bird a few months ago, because it appealed to me subconsciously,on some level.
I tried to Google some info about it,but found nothing,so I don't know the legend behind it,but if anyone does I'd like to here it.

Cheers / Darren

Just reading through your blog
and reading Stephen King's "IT",at the same time, makes me wonder if King hasn't just tapped into his subconscious thoughts, and tried to personify them to some degree in his fictitious stories,as a form of therapy, trying in some way to make sense of what they're trying to tell him.
Similar to what you're doing with your blog (not that I'm suggesting your stories are fictitious) analyzing what's coming through to you.

I say that because, you mention the YELLOW eyes of the owl...and the first time 'IT' appears in the novel,'IT' has YELLOW eyes:
"There were yellow eyes in there:the sort of eyes he had always imagined but never actually seen down in the basement. It's an animal,he thought incoherently, that's all it is,some animal..."

Also, one of the main characters, trying to figure out what 'IT' is,is named Mike.-)

Thought you might be interested in a special dream or extra- or interdimensional visit about a week ago:

I'm gently approaching an owl on the ground. He's sentient, watching. I move slowly so as not to startle him.

As I get closer and "meet" the owl, it (well, he, I think) reaches out to me affectionately. Joyously I smooth the feathers around his face.

Owl dreams can be extraordinary mystical!
