the script writers of MAD MEN are reading this blog (obviously)

that pesky number
owl imagery and death

Some imagery from the television show MAD MEN matches the theme of this blog. The episode is titled A Day's Work and was originally aired on 20 Apr. 2014. The show opens with Don Draper sleeping in and waking up at 12:34 in the afternoon (this shows up at time-count 1:11). He is looking at the first incarnation of the digital clock. I had a very similar clock radio on my bedside in the early 70's. the kind with the bold white Helvetica numerals that would "flip" down each minute.

The second image is an owl poster, or embroidered wall hanging, in Sally's room (seen at about 4:50). During this scene Sally is talking about the death of a friend's mother (owls and death as a mythic theme). Also in the frame is a troll (symbolic of an alien), some peace signs (symbolic of, well, peace), multiple butterflies (symbolic of death and re-birth) and Charlie Brown and Linus (symbolic of existential dialog).

So, what I can safely conclude is that the script writers of this show have been scouring my blog for inspiration.

Here is another curious MAD MEN post, involving my own impressions and then a follow-up confirmation, all having to do with UFOs. (linked HERE)

I thought of you and your blog as well! I wondered how many people viewing this episode would notice the owl and do the same.

Just want to share my own little sync with this blog post. As soon as I was done reading it, our chinese food delivery arrived and my wife suggested we watch Mad Men while we eat. My coworker has been burning me DVDs of the latest season from his DVR. I knew we were on episode 2 but I was unaware of the title or air date. I popped the disc in, hit play, and the first scene was Don Draper in bed with his alarm clock going off! I couldn't help but smile. Maybe not the most far-fetched synchronicity but it was meaningful to me. BTW, I also had an alarm clock like that in the 70s. -Marc

LOL, Owl art became very 'in' in the late 1960s. I was slightly younger than the character Sally and had Owl posters and macrame. I personally never associated it with aliens or ufos and yet was aware of my secret life that of some family members too.

You should start asking for royalties, Mike :P

And about how owl art became popular in the 60's, I wonder what triggered it, and who started the trend.

Owls have become very popular again, starting only a couple years ago. I see them EVERYWHERE, where before I hardly saw them at all. There seems to be a corresponding increase in people's interest in all things paranormal and spiritual.

I started cracking up the other night. On rare occasions i go to bed with ear phones in my ear. Over the weekend i fell asleep listening to your interview with Jonathan Talat Philips. I woke up with "Star Man" by David Bowie blasting in my ear and looked at the clock. it was 12:34 am. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar... but i did get a chuckle out of it. "figures." i said to myself, and went back to sleep.
