owl on a cold winter's night

Last week I saw an owl on a telephone post. I was walking to my car on a cold winter night, after leaving a friends house. At the time I was in a somber emotional mood. It felt like I was in confusing point in my life. I stood directly under the owl for a minute or so, and it watched me from above but never flew off.

The next afternoon my friend (who's house I left the previous night) saw a Great Gray Owl on a post right outside her window. Earlier that day, she had received an emotional email from an old boyfriend, and when they were dating they both had lots of curious owl sightings, including owl dreams!

I'm not sure what any of this means, but I feel obligated to pay attention.

audio conversation with Marla Frees

Two days ago I was cross country skiing alone in the Wyoming backcountry. There is a lovely trail that culminates on a very lovely mountaintop (called Windy Ridge), and I was racing against early darkness at this latitude in winter. I had my iPod and it was set on shuffle.

During the final chords of a loud punk rock song (good for skiing fast) I thought to myself:

"Hey, I should post that audio interview with Marla Frees, that was really good. Why haven't I thought of that before?"

This came in the form of a nice thought, something I've written about in previous posts. And, within seconds, the song ended and your voice came on, it was the same interview. It was a very magical moment; I didn't even know it was on the iPod. I recently updated some music, and I guess it loaded all the interview files I had stored on my computer. I was really impressed with our conversation, it was breezy and without any pretensions or nervousness.

I listened to the entire interview (taking me to the top of the mountain) and then I skied through perfect powder snow (with gravity helping) down to my car.

The conversation with Marla was recorded in April of 2010. The reason I contacted her was for me to make sense of some of my own life events, most particularly about the October of '09, and the synchronistic whirlwind that defined that month. Marla and I did a proper psychic session on Sunday October 4th of 2009 (Hey, I just noticed that's 10-4, a synchro-phrase for affirmative) and that session came at a VERY pivotal moment in my life. Please believe me when I say that Marla has VERY powerful psychic skills, and our initial meeting was astonishingly prescient.

I used about 15 minutes of edited excerpts from this audio file as part of a very ambitious podcast where I go on and on about the weird intensity of my personal experiences during October of last year. I'll add that I saw two owls on two separate nights during the editing of this deeply personal podcast, and I can't help but read something important into those curious owl sightings.

One valuable lesson learned is that one should NOT use the term "Flaky new age weirdness" when conversing with Marla, even with the overt use of air quotes!

audio conversation with Andy Colvin

The Mothman is a mythic creature that made an appearance along the Ohio River in West Virginia in 1967. Multiple witnesses saw this apparition during a flap that also included a whole slew of paranormal weirdness. It is the subject of John Keel's must-read classic, THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES.

Andy Colvin was a boy in Charleston West Virginia during that heady time, and he claims to have had his own powerful experiences that go well beyond simple seeing a large red-eyed winged creature. And these experiences have followed him to this day.

His obsessive role as a researcher has culminated in three books and a 36-hour documentary (that's not a typo) earning him the title The Mothman Photographer. He also has a blog.

A simple snapshot taken by Andy's sister. There is a somewhat elusive figure in the window just above Andy's left shoulder. Make of it what you will.

These are representations of The Garuda, and if you squint your eyes a little, there is a resemblance to that figure in the window above.

During the interview Andy talks about a very curious photo from 1973 (see above). We see him as a 13 year old boy, with a blurry image out the window. At one point, his three year old son saw the snapshot, pointed to the window and said, "The Garuda." (see image to the left) And, if you look at the image, it does seem to take on the form of the the Hindu Deity, albeit fuzzy and elusive. But perhaps even more strange is the profound significance that this photo holds for Andy.
