email from Mac Tonnies

I searched thru my old email files and I found hundreds of messages from Mac Tonnies. He was a master of the quick note and the insightful reply.

Below is an edited email reply from Mac, from just a little over two years ago. We’d had a long phone conversation the night before. I had been to New York and met with Budd Hopkins and Dave Jaccobs, with the documentary crew, this was the “whirlwind trip” mentioned in the text.

Mac was an amazing guy, and he kept me balanced as I struggled to make sense of my own story. He helped me enormously and the world is a lesser place without him.

Mike: Good chat session last night, I needed that. Thanks.

Mac: It's always uniquely therapeutic to talk UFOs with someone who knows what he's talking about. Sounds like a whirlwind trip!

There seems to be a desire (from the film crew folks) for me to stand up and declare: "Hello, my name is Mike, and I am a UFO abductee."

But, I can't quite get there.

I kind of sensed that. Great drama, but not your bag -- and rightfully not. You certainly appear to share experiences with some "abductees," but the label is so stifling that it's undeserving of your balanced skepticism, in my opinion.

Is that like an alcoholic saying that he doesn't have a drinking problem? Am I in denial?

I don't think so. You're simply suspending judgment (and in so doing transcending what, ultimately, is a fairly limiting label).

Very insightful. There is no reason to label yourself as anything. You are a human having some interesting experiences.

If you choose to share them, great. If not, no worries.

much love

I never knew Mac or followed his site... until recently didnt really know much about him at all.

From this short email give and take he was an original mind! I am sure he is in a better place but am sorry he is gone... his voice was obviously unique.

You arent easy to pigeonhole either. I think thats all to the good.

I agree 100% that you should eschew the labeling game of which UFO buffs are so fond of. It's one of the things that has kept the research in such a rotting level of stagnation —and people like Mac tried to fight those vices.

On an aside note: I wonder if the people who went to that Starbucks ever realized what a treasure trove of knowledge and insight they were passing by. Instead of asking Mac for a latte, they should have asked (or begged) him to sit down with them and talk!

[I know I have a different POV regarding this, because I'm Mexican and around here people who work on Starbucks or waiting tables don't have college degrees in liberal arts. Then again, a guy working at Starbucks in the States can earn easily twice the money of what an engineer with a masters degree makes in Mexico...]

So strange- first of all I thought for the longest time that Mac was British. Secondly, he's what I call a 'Phil Type'- a certain distinct personality type I first encountered in a friend of mine named Phil. Even he was aware that there were others like him. Funny how people's writing can be so different from who they are as people.

Apropos to your posts (10/27 and 10/30) about the image projected from your cataract-diagnosed eye, I heard Mac Tonnies speak on the Radio Misterioso int'vw of 07/27/2009 at about the 49 minute mark about the bubble images appearing from his retinal-occlusion-diagnosed eye.

http://www.radiomisterioso.com/category/fortean/ (scroll down)

Had y'all talked about the phenomenon?

Thank you for your comments on the MacGregors' Synchronicity site from which I came to be acquainted with your site, Mac Tonnies, Greg Bishop, etc. By following various links is how I found myself listening to the talk with the now respectfully-departed Mr. Tonnies.

I will be most interested in his Cryptoterrestrial book next year.

Thank you for your continued posts.

Tears all over my keyboard reading this. Mac's clear mind and clear language. Such a shame. I want to "rage, rage, rage against the dying of the light".

He seemed like a nice guy and I would have liked to have shared a coffee or two with him.

And it's good to know a little more about the enigmatic Red Pill Junkie,so you're a Mexican?
