audio conversation with Mary Rodwell

Mary Rodwell is a former nurse and midwife, and she now works in private practice as a professional counsellor. She is also a hypnotherapist (including past life regressions), Reiki Master as well as researcher and author.

Mary is also the founder of the Australian Close Encounter Resource Network, (ACERN). The primary role role of ACERN is to offer professional counselling, support, hypnotherapy and information to individuals and their families with anomalous paranormal experiences, particularly specializing in abduction-contact experiences. This is not a research organization, it is a resource for therapeutic counseling and support.

The focus of this conversation was on the tensions within the UFO research community. Specificly when folks are confronted with reports and experiences well beyond the simplistic materialist framework that defines our existence. This subject forces any thoughtful observer to look deeply into the multi-dimensional aspects of not only UFOs, but reality itself.

There are a set of interviews with Mary done by Alex Tsakiris on Skeptiko that are essential listening. Linked here are PART ONE and PART TWO

Mary is the author of Awakening: How Extraterrestrial Contact Can Transform Your Life.

My Mum Talks with Aliens

This documentary was produced by Australian television and focuses on Mary's son Chris, and his attempts to understand his mother's work with UFO abduction. Recommended viewing.

Hi Mike -

This was another excellent interview. Mary Rodwell does have a very strong voice, supporting her views credibly and well. You did a great job of drawing her out on the most compelling and interesting aspects, in part by opening up and sharing your own experience which I find adds depth to the material, and is very helpful to listeners who share aspects in common with your experience. Thanks for these interviews.

Being a little behind with my podcasting, so I just listened to this interview today.

I really like Mary's assertion re. researchers vs therapists. When the whole debacle with David Jacobs happened some years ago, I made the question on whether abduction researchers should also play the role of therapists, because it seems both roles would come into conflict, when it comes to the issue of the patient's well-being --the researcher's main goal should be to prove the reality of abductions; the therapist's main goal should be to help the abductee to come to terms with his or her experience, even if that means not making the case public.

It's interesting how Mary said John Mack preferred to retain credibility by way of not having a direct experience, because not long ago I read an article on Aeon magazine written by the daughter of Mack's last sentimental companion, and in the article it's clear Mack always yearned to have that one final personal confirmation from the phenomenon. A rather understandable feeling, because to see it wouldn't make sense to devote all your energy studying something you'd rather never come in contact with --how many astronomers have never wished to travel to Mars, or see the Andromeda galaxy with their own eyes... although perhaps historians who study the Spanish Inquisition are probably quite happy to keep their research on Medieval torture strictly
theoretical...

I really like the idea of the UFO phenomenon as a mirror, in which we all project our innermost fears and fantasies. How we interpret the phenomenon speaks more about ourselves, than the phenomenon itself; but mirrors have proven to be quite useful to have around ;)
