astounding owl video

More incredible owl imagery!

There was video footage that same day in the outskirts of Greenfield Missouri. I've been in contact with the two folks (Tony & Faren) involved with the photographs and video. (location here)

Tony wrote: "I have spoken to several people with of wildlife knowledge, including one conservation agent. He said he had never seen more than 3 or 4 owls in one spot. This video doesn't do the sighting justice. There was probably more than 200 in the area."

You simply MUST watch the Hi-Definition clips on YouTube:

Please keep in mind, the location of this incredible owl sighting is also a point on a map. A place that lines up with Kansas City and Byron North Dakota, whatever that means. As best as I can figure, this owl video was filmed 123 miles from Mac's apartment. Yes, 123.

Amazing clips Mike! Wow... very cool and eerie...

Really intriguing. I mean, what could cause such a behavior? a sudden surge of pests (rats or mice) in the vicinity? a subsonic disturbance?

Wow - do you see this? The owls sense as soon as they're in the focus of the camera and turn around and look directly into the camera. Especially you can see that at the end with the one owl in the front. Unfortunately the camera is moving too quickly, but if you pause once in a while you pick it up. Great video, thank you for posting!

Owls don't migrate do they? I've never seen more than one at a time.

I watched the video yesterday and I've been thinking about it ever since. The weird thing about this for me is that there aren't any trees around. At least that you can see in the video.

Weird, weird, weird!

I'm thinking along the same lines as Red Pill Junkie-- a rodent population explosion, a subsonic disturbance, a strange mating ritual never seen before...?

If it isn't anything like that, then I'm bewildered. That's just amazingly weird.

Reminder to the commenters - Please keep in mind, the location of this incredible owl sighting (photos and video) is also a point on a map. A place that lines up with Kansas City and Byron North Dakota, whatever that means.

A line on a map that made me obsessively nutty for WEEKS!

I have seen this trailer: http://www.movie-list.com/trailers.php?id=legendoftheguardians and thought you might find it interesting, if you haven't seen it already.

Thank you.

Okay, I'm going to say this- reluctantly-for reasons that , I'm sure, you could understand. I've read about your encounters with owls, and hence , your fascination or curiosity about them. I don't see owls-never a once in my life. But I encounter hawks fascinatingly frequently. I've looked up their totem symbolism. "Messengers" is the dominant characteristic given. Okay. But I'm going crazy to know if they are the messengers , and if so, what the heck is the message; or , if not, am I the messenger, and if so , what the heck is the message. Just wondering if you sight hawks too, or any of your readers. When I see them I always have a sense of satisfaction. I don't know how to further describe ( other than awe---they are such incredible birds ) my reaction to finding them , or being found by them.
You always intrigue me with your stories. Thanks.

Hmmm... yes I dont see owls often either. Hawks are circling in the sky all the time here in Texas.

I found myself looking into the behavior of owls because of this post, really after reading up on their 'natural history' I am not sure how unusual this display is...

It may be unusual from the standpoint of people's ordinary experience of owls but I dont know if owls find this meeting up etc so unusual...

Still I did find something very curious I had never heard of- that owls have been reported to luminesce, Barn Owls in particular:

"Summary. The historical anecdotal accounts of luminosity in the Barn Owl Tyto alba, in England and Australia, are reviewed and found to be convincing. There are many eyewitness accounts of unexplained lights behaving like hunting Barn Owls, and some of those lights were seen ultimately to be luminescing Barn Owls. This phenomenon may be a plausible explanation for the Will o' the Wisp and similar myths in England, and the Min Min Light in Australia.
The cause of the luminescence is more contentious. Contamination of the owl's feathers by luminescent fungi, from decaying wood within tree hollows, is here considered to be an unlikely cause. Instead, it is proposed that the Barn Owl may be intrinsically bioluminescent. However, this hypothesis requires scientific investigation." see The Owl Pages
